The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a significant honors show draws close, one notices a demand for introducing of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often modest productions, however the design behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games worldwide and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge game development, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
